Task 30 - Red Square Café (Manhattan, NY)

(30) Eat in 10 New Restaurants (17/20)

Restaurant:  Red Square Café

Rating:         3-Stars

While wandering around Chinatown we came across the Red Square Cafe. Given we had limited time to catch the subway back to Grand Central to make the Metro West train back to New Haven we opted to give it a try.

I ordered the chicken with cashew nuts. It was your typical Chinese food. There was little to differentiate it from any other quickly prepared take out. The sauce was a bit gelatinous but the chicken juicy and well cooked.. The red & green peppers and celery were crispy and fresh. The portion size was generous and the cost was minimal. It satisfied our hunger and fit our schedule.

We also got a bowl of chicken noodle soup and wanton soup. Like the chicken with cashew nuts the soups were average at best. The broth was a tad on the salty side but again it was satisfying and hit the spot.

The atmosphere felt cheap and more like a Chinese market then a restaurant despite the nicely done koi pond. If you are looking for a quick meal on the cheap then it’s worth the visit.
